INTERMISSION TREATS / LOST CHRISTCHURCH CINEMA COLLECTION
MEDIA FACTS — 15 OCTOBER 2026

THE STORY
At Deluxe Cinemas in Christchurch, the candy bar is also a place to remember the city's old picture theatres. Intermission Treats come in four individual 90 g boxes celebrating the Regent, Savoy, Avon and Westend. Each box carries its cinema's own story on the reverse.

Cinema operator Jeremy Stewart grew up catching the bus into Cathedral Square to go to the movies. He remembers the queues, the buildings and the rush to the candy bar at intermission. Customers kept asking whether Deluxe sold Jaffas, prompting Jeremy to approach Rainbow Confectionery in Oamaru to supply orange coated chocolate for Intermission Treats.

JEREMY'S WORDS
“Even today, customers at both Deluxe Cinemas and Town Hall Cinemas regularly ask us whether we sell Jaffas.”
— Jeremy Stewart, cinema operator and project spokesperson

“That’s really why we’ve created the Lost Christchurch Cinema Collection and brought back our own Intermission Treats. It’s about recapturing a little bit of that magic and nostalgia for people who remember those days, while introducing a new generation to a piece of Christchurch cinema history.”
— Jeremy Stewart, from his personal account supplied for the media pack
